Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur ends 6-0
Manchester City went to work against a once solid Tottenham Hotspur defense last night to finish 6-0 and earn the fourth spot in the Premier League. It only took 13 seconds for Jesus Navas to find the opening and score the first goal of the match that would set the tone for the rest of the game. After Sandro got an own goal and Sergio Aguero got a nice strike from close range to make it 3-0, things were looking difficult for Tottenham and they would only continue to get worse.
The second half saw another goal from Aguero and Alvaro Negredo followed it up with his fifth goal in the Barclays Premier League before Navas scored once again in injury-time to make for one of the most one-sided victories of the season.
Man City is now tied at 22 points with Southampton but ahead on goal difference, clenching the fourth spot as most teams have played their first 12 games in the Premier League. The Spurs drop to ninth with 20 points.
It was the first time that Navas started in the Premier League since September, for the Manchester derby, and he certainly didn’t waste any time in making his presence on the field known. City had five changes while Hotspur made six, including Erik Lamela who had his first start in the league.
The first goal was the joint-quickest one of this season. The French goalkeeper managed to save the 20-yard shot from Aguero but the loose ball made it to Navas and he lofted it over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.
Spurs began to come back and had the possession advantage but weren’t able to turn it into goals. 34 minutes in and Fernandinho took advantage of a clearance to send Nasri on the left. He lifted the ball and sent it to Aguero but Lloris blocked the attack from the Argentinian. The dropped ball made its way to Negredo, who got a great shot that eventually made it into the net after it was deflected by Younes Kaboul and Sandro.
